St Cuthbert’s Hospice first opened its doors in 1988 to provide services, free of charge, for those with advanced illness and those approaching the end of their lives. Over the past three decades St Cuthbert’s Hospice has developed and grown its services to meet increasing and changing needs of people in County Durham.
From only being able to offer care two days per week, they now offer 24 hour, round the clock In Patient care 365 days of the year for those suffering from life-limiting conditions. Despite the changes, there has been one constant throughout the history of this great charity: the kindness and hard work of staff and the many dedicated volunteers who are vital in supporting the many services the Hospice provide. Based in County Durham, there are also a range of charity shops across the north east that help to raise the much needed funds for the hospice.
St Cuthbert’s initially reached out to Workwear Express in early 2010 as they wanted some garments for their staff at the hospice as part of their uniform. Incredibly, almost 10 years later, they are still turning to us for all of their workwear and promotional clothing needs.
They most recently came to us in late 2018 as they needed some help with their Coast 2 Coast challenge. St Cuthbert’s have assembled a team of 13 men and women, who are by no means regular cyclists, to cycle 140 miles from Whitehaven on the West coast of England to Tynemouth on the East. All with the aim of raising vital funds for St Cuthbert’s Hospice.
The team, which is made up of members of staff, their family and friends, have been training for the Coast 2 Coast challenge which begins in May. However over the winter, the cold and rainy weather was threatening to dampen their progress, quite literally. Luckily, this is where we stepped in.
We donated 13 Spiro Freedom Softshell Jackets to the team so they could continue to train throughout the winter in preparation for their huge challenge in May, and look good while they do so.
Workwear Express are proud to help out such a fantastic local charity whenever they need it. Not only are we part of the 88 Club, which sees Workwear Express make an annual donation of £88 to the hospice, going into 2019, we will also be continuing our already close partnership by providing St Cuthbert’s Hospice with more personalised clothing for other upcoming fundraising events.
