World Bicycle Day

According to the United Nations, International Days are “occasions to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity”. And surely there a few achievements of humanity which are greater than the humble bicycle. In 2018, The UN announced that 3rd June would be now known as World Bicycle Day.

In 2018, it was estimated that approximately 800 million people around the world were riding bicycles on a regular basis. That’s around 1 in 9 people on the planet who are taking part in a healthy, efficient and sustainable activity which is also a fun and crucial part of life for many. And that number could double by 2050.

For over 200 years now, the bicycle has been part of the global community, however transportation by bicycle is arguably more important now than it has ever been. In many parts of the world, bicycles are a vital part of everyday life which are used to access food, education, healthcare and work. In more developed areas they are becoming more common as a growing number of people are looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

Whether it is using public transport less, using your car less or going all in and swapping your car for a bicycle, many are choosing the greener, more reliable bicycle. And of course many people cycle because it’s a fun hobby. Taking up cycling on weekends is a great way to keep fit while exploring and discovering the world around you.

So the bicycle is a simple, affordable, reliable and sustainable way of travelling and it’s a great way to get fit and healthy. What’s not to like! With that in mind, what can you do to get involved this World Bicycle Day (and beyond)?

Well its simple really – plan a trip! It doesn’t matter if you live in a big city or a quiet countryside, there will be many cycle routes which will let you see the area in a completely different way. It’s something all the family can get involved in so make sure to keep an eye out for World Bicycle Day events happening near you and remember to spread the word.
