July 2013 This Week's Premier League Twitter Top 5

Our Twitter Premier League contest has been running for just over a week now and has seen a great amount of support and a variety of different names being entered.

While there have been many different players mentioned by those entering the contest, some are proving to be more popular than others.

So which players are currently sitting in the top 5 in terms of the number of entries they have picked up so far and what chance do they have of finishing the end of August with the most goals?

5. Daniel Sturridge - Liverpool

Has become an integral part of the Anfield outfit since joining in January from Chelsea for a reported £12 million. While the England international only scored 11 goals in the league last season, many expect this number of increase this season after moves made by manager Brandan Rodgers to strength the entire Liverpool side.

How many goals Sturridge scores this season will depend on where Luis Suarez will be plying his trade when the it kicks off. Having expressed a desire to leave, with Arsenal interested in the Uruguayan, if Suarez were to leave the club, Sturridge would need to step up and try to fill his boots as best he can if the Merseyside club are to achieve a top four finish.

4. Romelu Lukaku - Chelsea

After a successful loan spell as West Brom last season, where he picked up 17 league goals and a 6th place finish in the Premier League scoring charts, the Belgian has returned toChelsea as he aims to become an integral part of returning manager Jose Mourinho’s plans at Stamford Bridge this season.

With the 20 year old battling it out with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba for the opportunity to lead the line, along with constant speculation regarding a move for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, Lukaku will have to hit the ground running and start the season well if he’s to avoid becoming a bit part player this season.

3. Gareth Bale - Tottenham

The Welsh international and two time PFA Player’s Player of the Year has become an integral part of Spurs team, helping the North London outfit with 21 league goals on their way to a fifth place finish last season.

While the 24 year old would be one of the favourites to top the scoring charts this season, Bale has been met with constant speculation regarding a world record £85 million move to Spanish giants, Real Madrid. While the White Hart Lane club are reluctant to sell their prized asset, constant media speculation suggests that Bale is eager for talks with the Galacticos and could be Madrid bound before the season even gets underway.

2. Sergio Aguero - Manchester City

Struggled to recapture the sort of form that saw him help City to the title during his first season for the Blues in the 2011-12 season, scoring just 12 goals in the league in what was a bit of an injury blighted campaign last season.

However, with Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic all joining the club this summer, there is sure to be plenty of support to help give the Argentinean plenty of chances to hit the back of the net as long as he can avoid any repeat injuries and keep his playing time up.

1. Robin Van Persie - Manchester United

Helped Manchester United secure the title in his first season at Old Trafford, scoring 26 goals on his way to lifting the Premier League Golden Boot for the second time in his career. The first being his previous season at London side Arsenal where he netted 30 goals.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson may have retired, with former Everton boss David Moyes taking the hot seat at the Theatre of Dreams, whether Man U can recapture the title or not, Robin Van Persie will be there or there abouts at the top of the scoring charts when the season comes to an end.

However, with Man U’s early running featuring trips to Swansea and Liverpool, as well as a home clash against Chelsea in their first three fixtures, it may be difficult for the Netherlands international to get the goals required to finish August at the top.

Remember that the winner of this competition will be the player who is the top scorer at the end of August, not at the end of the season.
