Entry to our Twitter competition has now closed and the Premier League campaign is now in full swing. With all 20 teams having played their opening fixtures, there are a few players who have kicked off the season in good goalscoring form and look set to challenge as a potential winner of our Premier League Twitter contest.
Take a look below to see which Premier League players currently make up the top five players picked by the competition entrants and how they are fairing after the first game of the season.
Wilfried Bony - Goals: 1
Started Swansea's home game against last season's champions Manchester United from the bench as boss Michael Laudrup wanted to ease the Ivory Coast international into England's top flight game. With Manchester United taking a rather flattering 4-0 lead, Swansea decided they had nothing to lose and brought Bony into the game mid way through the second half. The 24 year old wasted little time showing why the Welsh outfit paid a club record fee of £12 million to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem by grabbing an 82nd minute consolation goal and giving the The Swans faithful a taste of the goalscoring prowess he may provide this season.
Daniel Sturridge - Goals: 1
With Luis Suarez suspended to start the season, pressure has fallen on Sturridge to fill the goalscoring void left by the Uruguayan's suspension. The England international seemed to embrace this pressure as their Saturday lunchtime kick off against Stoke City got underway at Anfield. The former Chelsea and Man City youngster was a constant thorn in the sides of The Potters defence, going close on numerous occasions. A rasping 25 yard strike from the 23 year old beat keeper Asmir Begovic, finding the bottom corner and netting the Merseyside club an opening day 1-0 victory in front of an ecstatic Kop.
Gareth Bale - Goals: 0
A reported injury to the Welsh international kept him out of the squad for Tottenham's Sunday trip to newly promoted Crystal Palace, amid speculation of a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. With very little match time in pre season, niggling injuries and a possible move away to the club, it's very unlikely that last season's Player's Player of the Year will get any playing time, let alone the goals needed in the last game away to Swansea before the August 31st deadline of our competition.
Sergio Aguero - Goals: 1
The Argentinian international looks to be back to his best as the season got underwa, helping Manuel Pelligrini kick off the season with an emphatic 4-0 at home to Newcastle United. Linking up with strike partner Edin Dzeko on regular occasions, Aguero had a chance to start the season on a flyer as his point blank effort from 6 yards out was stopped by Magpie keeper Tim Krul. However, the former Athletico Madrid star wasn't deterred and got a much deserved first goal of the season and City's second mid way through the first half. With Man City's next two games against Cardiff City and Hull Tigers, there will be plenty of opportunities for Aguero to get the goals he needs to finish at the top of the Workwear Express charts come the end of August.
Robin Van Persie - Goals: 2
Following his terrific form that helped Manchester United lift the title last season, many wouldn't have been surprised at the scintillating display the Dutch international put on show at the Liberty Stadium as David Moyes picked up his first league win as United boss in a 4-1 victory.
In what was a rather lacklustre first half display from the Red Devils, RVP was one of the few bright sparks as he fired home from close range to open the scoring before Danny Welbeck doubled their lead a few minutes later. However, the best was yet to come in the second half as the former Arsenal strike jinked his way through the Swansea defence before crashing a powerful effort past a helpless Michel Vorm and into the room of the net.
If Van Persie continues this sort of scoring form, there's no doubt that he will finish at the top of the charts come the end of August. However, with difficult games against Chelsea and Liverpool, it could be difficult for United to create the sort of chances that they managed to get on Saturday evening.
Even though a number of the top 5 picks look set to challenge for top spot in the scoring charts at the end of August, there are a number of other players who have also started well and could upset the apple cart.
Danny Welbeck - Goals: 2 Doubled his tally from the whole of last year in 90 minutes against Swansea City and those two goals could light a fire under the England international that turns him into the sort of goal scoring force that many have expected him to deliver in the past.
Christian Benteke - Goals: 2 Kicked on from an impressive first season in English football where he grabbed 19 league goals for Premier League strugglers Aston Villa, with a brace in a shock 3-1 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Aided by a poor Arsenal defence, the Belgian international was able to grab two goals, despite missing a penalty early in the first half. With plenty of support from his team mates, Benteke could get the sort of goals that will allow him to repeat, if not exceed, last season's impressive tally.
